Manchester’s vibrant art scene has always been a source of inspiration, and few capture its essence as beautifully as Caroline Dowsett. An artist, painter, and maker, Caroline's work is a celebration of movement, color, and everyday moments. Her bold and playful style, characterized by fluid shapes and dynamic palettes, transcends boundaries—gracing everything from murals to textiles, and even brand packaging.

Caroline Dowsett

For Treehouse Hotel Manchester, set to open in 2025, Caroline has added her signature touch by creating bespoke bird boxes, perfectly reflecting her playful style. She’s also crafting a large-scale, one-of-a-kind mural for the property, letting her creativity take flight in unexpected corners of the hotel.

Come along as we chat with Caroline, who spills her favorite Manchester hideaways for art, creativity, and the endless inspiration she uncovers in a city as vibrant and eclectic as her work.

What are the best galleries to visit in Manchester?

Some of my absolute favorite galleries in Manchester are Castlefield Gallery, HOME, Smolensky, The Whitworth Gallery, and Saan1. They each offer something unique and inspiring.

Street art is popular in the city, where can you see the best pieces?

I’m always amazed by the creativity on display in Stevenson Square, right outside Fred Aldous. A stroll around the Northern Quarter will also lead you to some incredible street art. And if you’re up for a short 15-minute ride from the city center, Withington is another fantastic spot for street art.

Which are your favourite Manchester based artists?

There are so many talented artists in Manchester, it’s hard to choose! But a few of my favorites are Amy Marsh, DR.ME, Jude Wainwright, Piicasa, and Rosie Booth.

Where is best to buy artist materials in the city?

Fred Aldous, hands down! It’s my go-to spot for everything.

How does the city inspire your creativity?

Manchester is my hometown, and it holds a special place in my heart. The memories I have here deeply influence my work. But it’s also the spirit of the city—the optimism, the sense of community, and the encouragement you find in its people—that truly inspires me.

Could you share where people can find your work on the property or around the city?

You can spot my work at a few different locations around the city! Look for it at The Whitworth Art Gallery near the art garden, on stationery at Fred Aldous, on the shutters at UNITOM, inside Feelgoodclub café, and at various spots in Withington as part of the Withington Walls project.

What inspired your work at Treehouse Hotel Manchester, particularly the colors in your pieces?

The colours in my piece are inspired by Treehouse's core palette, blended with bright, vibrant hues that echo the vivid colors found in nature.

What was the highlight of working on this project for you?

Working with Treehouse on this project has been an absolute joy, from the initial sketches to the final touches. The biggest highlight has to be painting the piece itself!
